IMPORTANT: encouraging use of cloth face masks

Southern Oregon University , Public Updates

Dear students and colleagues,

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Oregon Health Authority now recommend wearing cloth face coverings when near others in public settings. SOU encourages those who are able to wear cloth face coverings to do so when they may be around others as a voluntary measure to help prevent community spread of the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19.

Members of our campus community should still stay home to avoid all non-essential contact with others, wash their hands frequently, avoid touching their faces and maintain six feet of social distancing between themselves and others. These are the most important measures we can take to limit the spread of COVID-19, and wearing a cloth face covering should be considered an additional action that individuals can take to protect themselves and others in the community.

SOU recommends cloth face coverings specifically, as surgical masks and N95 respirators should continue to be reserved for healthcare professionals.

Who should not wear a cloth face covering?
The CDC recommends no face masks for children under the age of 2, anyone who has trouble breathing, and those who are unconscious, incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the cloth face covering without assistance.

How to make and wear cloth face coverings
The CDC has created
a flyer to show how to make and wear cloth face coverings properly. Additionally, many video tutorials are available online for both no-sew face masks and face masks that require sewing.

Face covering supplies and resources
Efforts are underway to procure resources including fabric, needles and thread for SOU students who do not otherwise have access to them. Students will be notified when the materials become available and how they can access them.
Single-use paper (non-medical) masks are currently out of stock.

Sincerely,
