Dear students,

We are pleased to share some good news: SOU’s mandatory and student fees will be reduced by just over 20 percent for spring term, to reflect decreased access to some services funded by those fees during our temporary shift to remote operations.

SOU's Board of Trustees voted last week to approve a reduction to the fees, and authorized the university administration to make appropriate adjustments – which we have done, in consultation with ASSOU leadership. We worked together to balance a reasonable level of savings against a variety of financial obligations.

The following chart offers an example of the spring term fee reduction for a full-time student.

Your student fees pay for many valued student support programs – and wages for the committed people who operate them. These are services you may need, both during this period of remote instruction and when you come back to campus for conventional coursework.

The spring term fee reduction applies to mandatory fees that fund student health and medical services, student activities, student employment, bond obligations approved by students to pay for the student recreation center, and other student services. The student health fee was not reduced because we are increasing our ability to provide remote health services and will continue to serve students on campus.

The existing online course fee will continue only for those courses to which it already was applied. We are not applying the online fee to courses that were previously face-to-face and are now being moved to remote delivery due to the COVID-19 emergency.

The new fee schedule is now reflected in all student accounts for spring term.

The Board of Trustees also authorized the university administration to consider additional fee reductions later this spring if we are able to identify areas of savings that can be returned to students. We will be mindful of that possibility, with input from ASSOU, as we get a better sense of remote campus operations.

We will miss seeing you on campus each day, but are pleased to continue delivering courses in a way that is safe and supportive of our continuing education. We wish you a healthy and relaxing spring break, and look forward to your virtual presence in our remotely delivered classes beginning April 6!
