Dear Faculty Colleagues,

Many thanks to those of you who were able to attend the open forum yesterday. I hope the information we shared about COVID-19 was helpful.

First and foremost, it is extremely important that you refer to the following website for regular updates on how our campus is responding to the virus: https://sou.edu/campus/notifications/  You may also wish to check the CDC website.

I am asking that you accommodate students who are requesting to miss class due to illness or who are limiting contact with others as a precaution due to possible exposure to infectious disease. Accommodations can include providing opportunities for students to complete alternative assignments, or to make up work such as missed exams. Other options include allowing students to submit their work remotely through Moodle or email, or making adjustments to course grading policies. It is important that you clearly communicate information about any accommodations you provide to students.

If you need support, or ideas about how to accommodate students who aren't able to attend class, please visit the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning (CATL) https://inside.sou.edu/catl/instructional-resiliency-guide.html.  Hannon Library has the ability to loan Chromebooks to students who do not have home computers.

Faculty are strongly discouraged from requiring medical documentation from a student who reports or presents as having symptoms such as those outlined by the CDC.  Additionally, please be sensitive to the fact that students may be experiencing heightened distress or concern for their own health and well being and that of others (e.g., friends and family members).

Lastly, if you are feeling ill, please stay home.  Speak with your Division Director and Chair to determine how best to cover your classes.  Of course, please don't hesitate to contact me directly if you need further assistance.

Please be mindful that this is a fluid situation. The Incident Response Team is meeting daily to provide all of us with the most current information.

I appreciate all that you are doing to support our students and faculty/staff colleagues over the coming weeks.

My very best wishes,

Sue
