STUDENT JOBS: assurance of pay for hours during spring break

Southern Oregon University , Public Updates

Dear students and colleagues,

Our top academic priority as we address the COVID-19 outbreak is to ensure that all of our students have the resources they need to continue on their pathways to graduation. I want to assure those of you who rely on income from student jobs that our university will support you during our shift to largely remote operations.

Federal Work Study students who are unable to work or telework their scheduled hours because of limitations caused by the outbreak are eligible to continue recording those hours until their work study awards are exhausted. I have approved a proposal to guarantee our non-FWS students the same level of emergency pay assurance for as many as 80 hours during our two-week spring break.

Student jobs that don’t lend themselves to adequate social distancing, or cannot be done remotely, will be eligible for support whether or not the regular duties are performed. I encourage all supervisors of student workers to be creative in finding alternate tasks for those employees that will benefit both the university and the students.

The emergency hours for non-FWS student employees during spring break will be tracked and recorded using our usual Web Time Entry (WTE) system. Codes for these hours are being developed by our Payroll Office and supervisors will be advised of specifics before the reporting period ends.

My staff and I will keep you informed as our transition to remote operation results in changes that may affect you, and we will continue to watch for ways to prevent negative impacts. Our students’ educational journey remains the focus at SOU.
